anntp
anntp is a single-header implemenatation of the NNTP (aka incorrectly, the usenet protocol) protocol, which is a very early sort of distributed “forum” system made for the Usenet network, still active today.
It should run in all POSIX-compliant systems:
- Linux
- macOS
- WSL/Cygwin
- BSD
- IRIX
- Tru64
- AIX
- …
Don’t expect a port to Windows in a very long time :).
It supports TLS via OpenSSL (or I guess LibreSSL too), it is opt-in and to use it you need to define the ANNTP_TLS macro prior to inclusion.
Features
- Doesn’t have any required dependencies (except for TLS)
- A couple abstractions here and there
- It exists, which makes it one of the few NNTP libraries for C that don’t completely suck
- It’s small, auditable, and undestandable
anntp is on version 0.1 dev for now.
Source code
There’s the SourceHut repo, which is the official one, and a less-mantained github mirror. Prefer the sourcehut one.
- srht repo: https://git.sr.ht/~rosell/anntp
Eventually, I will host here an NNTP server and add a couple newsgroups for anntp, until then ugh…
Dependencies
- as said before, an UNIX system
- a C compiler able to compile C99 or later
- network connection, obviously
